A certificate certifying knowledge of the Italian language is required for non-EU immigrants for the purpose of obtaining a residence permit and for all foreigners residing in Italy who are entitled to apply for citizenship. Even foreigners living abroad may be interested in certifying their level, such as a non-native speaker Italian teacher or foreign students wishing to enroll in a degree or master’s degree program at an Italian university.
Both can apply to the Scuola Virgilio, which since 2013 has been the exam center of the University for Foreigners of Perugia for the official CELI certification system (Certificate of knowledge of the Italian language) and is currently the main exam center in western Sicily.
Divided into 6 levels (from A1 to C2) according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for the knowledge of languages), the CELI exams certify skills and ability to use the Italian language.
In addition to the general CELI exams, it is possible to take specific exams such as the CELI 2i – level B1 exam for citizenship.
To take the CELI exams, it is necessary to enroll at least 5 weeks before the exam, according to the official calendar prepared by the University for Foreigners of Perugia.
It is possible to register directly for a CELI exam, but it is advisable to follow a specific preparation course that Scuola Virgilio can organize upon request for one or more students, mainly as private lessons in the classroom or online.
